Artist Statement
I’m one of those people that stares. I can’t help it. My eyes get powerfully drawn to something almost every day, and when they do, I stare. It could be anything, a landscape, an image or object, and yes, even a person. When this happens, I figure it’s for a reason, so I document the moment by writing, sketching, or taking pictures. These moments of captivation turn into my muses.
When I’m ready to create, I lay out what I’ve collected and look at it. Themes and ideas become clear. They could be color, shape, symbols, memories, or archetypes. I use what emerges to create a visual story by drawing what stands out to me most. I might engage other mediums such as printmaking or collage as well. I know that a piece is complete when I can stare at it and feel settled. It’s like reaching an understanding with the muses that inspired me.
By gathering what I’m drawn to, looking closely at it, then using it to create something new, I catch sight of my innermost self. The process may begin with something catching my physical eyes, but my inner eye, is really guiding me. Perhaps you’ll find yourself staring when you look at my work, and in doing so, find a muse to guide you on a creative journey.
